Portrait of an organ grinder
First half of 19th century
Portrait of a young seated organ grinder and his barrel organ. Watercolor monogrammed S.B.
The young man wears gaiters, a wide-brimmed hat and a jacket that protect him from the weather. He left the wide shoulder strap of his organ and put his bag on the lid.
The figures organ, whose scenery is not visible, perfectly illustrates Ignaz Bruder's models from Waldkirch im Schwarzwald. The overall layout, the grid, the protective brass angles and brass handles are typical of this production.

Both musically and visually attractive, the carved wooden sketches depict mythical or caricatural characters who often deliver a political message and propagate new ideas using the same iconographic languages as the mysteries of the Middle Ages.
