The myth of the forsaken Pierrot is a poetic expression frequently used during the 19th century.
Here the automaton, model of Gustave Vichy, is balancing on the moon crescent. He sticks his tongue out at it, playing the mandolin in a nonchalant manner and the moon, mischievously, responds.
