55keyless Military Band Organ
Rudolph WURLITZER & Cie
In gold: trumpets, clarinets and piccolos, on a black and red façade embroidered with gold, surmounted by dragons, framed by fantasy hussars; it is a "Military Band Organ", one of the musical attractions found in bioscopes and skating rinks. It was in one of them, from southern Europe, that I found the instrument.
Built in 1906 in Cincinnati (USA), by a German-born firm, the Rudolph Wurlitzer Co., this instrument remains in the great tradition of merry-go-round organs at European fairs. Apart from the operation, which uses the perforated paper coils as memory support.
The scale separates trumpet rank from the other six registers, allowing for nice soli and other fanfare effects.
