Carved Carousel Donkey with moveable head
Gustave BAYOL circa 1885
When Jacques Tati shoots “Jour de Fête” in this small village of Indre, he pays tribute to the village of Sainte-Sévère that welcomed him during the Second World War, to its inhabitants and of course to its postman but also and especially to the fair.
From the first images, showmen arrive with trailers, a merry-go-round and a travelling bioscope. But it was the carousel donkey immortalized in several sequences that particularly caught my attention. Undoubtedly, that is the reason for his presence here.
