LOVE - Musical carving from Maurizio CATTELAN
beginning of 21th century
When modern art appropriates reassuring obsolescence of our childhood music boxes...
This 1/39-scale reproduction of Maurizio Cattelan’s installation in Piazza Affari in front of the Milan stock exchange in 2010 is entitled L.O.V.E. acronym for the sequence of words libertà (freedom), odio (hatred), vendetta (revenge) and eternità (eternity). Carved from a block of Carrara marble, like the antiques, the original sculpture represents a hand on which all the fingers have been cut except for the major.
Initially designed to fight modern capitalism, the irreverent work of the Italian artist born in 1960 is a provocative manifesto just like the famous banana taped on the wall of Perrotin gallery's booth at Art Basel Miami in 2018.
Our resin model turns on itself to the sound of a music box that performs Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. (listen-see on Youtube)
